What is a BIN?

A Bank Identification Number (BIN) is composed of the first 6-8 card number’s digits. It’s a key to identifying the card type, issuing bank name and payment processing system.

The BIN Checker derives all the information via these digits and displays it on your screen.

How does it work?

A BIN concept was established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to simplify and standardize the identification process for banks. BINs are part of the global financial system.

The primary industry of the card issuer is shown by the Major Industry Identifier (MII) or the first card digit. For example, an airline-related card can be identified by digits 1 or 2, while digits 4 and 5 signify a bank or financial institution like Visa or MasterCard. The next digits of the BIN contain encoded other data about the card.

Authorization

User verification via BINs involves identifying the cardholder and checking the transaction's legality.

For example, the cardholder might want to purchase something through an online resale platform using their bank card. They enter the full card number, CVV, and card expiration date into the special purchase form. The payment system (like Visa or Mastercard) immediately reads the BIN to identify the issuing bank and sends a payment request.

The issuing bank receives a withdrawal request, which appears as an information prompt. The bank checks the BIN card data to help prevent scam activities. By utilizing the BIN number, the bank decides to confirm or decline the transaction. When the withdrawal is approved, the necessary amount is held in the cardholder’s account. Then the purchase can be confirmed by the online store, and the transaction is completed.

The entire verification process depends on the BIN, which is used by both payment networks and issuing banks.
